Geocaching

Two geocaches have been established around Camp Avondale.  The basic idea of geocaching is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors using a GPS.

Geocaching is enjoyed by people from all age groups, with a strong sense of community and support for the environment. Each geocache may relate to a theme and may contain a “treasure”. Once a cache has been located, you can take a treasure and leave a treasure for someone else to find.  The Camp Avondale geocaches have been “seeded” with Scout-related items such as patches, stickers, pins, etc.  Use your personal GPS and navigation skills to find these hidden caches.  Once you have located the cache, sign the registry, take an item and leave an item for someone else.

The coordinates for the caches follow:

  • AV-01 is at N30°51.4914' & W090°58.8177'
  • AV-02 is at N30°51.5169' & W090°57.8201'
Please note that these geocaches are located in the woods around Camp Avondale so all precautions should be made to ensure the safety of all participants. Before hitting the trail, participants should advise their Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) or an adult in their troop of where they are going.   Participants should hike with a buddy (never hike alone) and at least one of the participants should be familiar with the use of a GPS before starting.  Make sure and bring water and wear clothing appropriate for cross country navigation through the woods.  Most importantly, HAVE FUN!!
