Re-Opening of Avondale Scout Reservation

Avondale Scout Reservation – Re-Opening!!

Even with the limitations of a pandemic, many changes and improvements have been going on recently at Avondale Scout Reservation, and we are excited to announce that OVERNIGHT CAMPING will now return!

Overnight camping will be allowed beginning Friday, September 25, 2020, though with so much still being built and improved at ASR, the overnight camping will be limited to Camp McGee….which is a beautiful part of Avondale Scout Reservation and includes the scenic Lake McGee.

Again, the new Sailing Club Area and new Climbing Tower are both closed to visitors and off limits, including the docks, at this time.  Additionally, Camp Avondale will remain closed as on-going improvements are being made to the existing campsites.  As we mentioned before, there’s LOTS going on at “your” Avondale Scout Reservation!!

**** IMPORTANT NOTE:  Please remember that you MUST have the written permission of your Charter Organization before you can go overnight camping, so that’s Step #1!!

That said, once you have that permission, we are excited to welcome our Scouts and Leaders back to ASR again, though in this “COVID-19 world” we live in now, we want to make sure that everyone stays safe and healthy.  So upon the expert advice of our Risk Management Committee, each participant attending/visiting/dropping off at ASR will be required to fill out the following three forms (all available to download on the Council website) and, along with the statement from your Charter Organization, please bring them with you to camp.

Additionally, and as you would expect, temperatures will be taken of everyone before entering the gates at ASR,  and of course, units should bring adequate cleaning supplies and hand sanitizer with them.

And one last note….the pandemic has certainly impacted the funding sources of Istrouma Area Council, so please be aware that cutting the grass of over 1,665 acres simply cannot be done as often as we’d like, so please be prepared for a little “tall grass” in some camp areas, okay?  Many thanks for understanding!!

Okay…so who’s READY for some much-anticipated camping at Camp McGee???

Remember….please contact E.J. Moore, ASR Ranger, at 225-933-1793 or EricJ.Moore@scouting.org as soon as you choose your weekend so he can process your registration and permits…and LET’S GO CAMPING!!
